The players find themselves surviving by salvaging various items for weapons to fight zombies and hostile survivors, also known as psychopaths, whilst rescuing friendly survivors that are also trapped in the shopping mall, and attempting to uncover the truth behind the incident.
The game's story sees players controlling Frank West, a photo journalist, who gets trapped in a shopping mall within the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, that is suffering from a zombie outbreak.
